High frequencies are quiet or inaudible to many adults — that is normal and does not mean it is not working. Follow with a dry soft brush for bonded dust.
A speaker cleaner uses high-frequency sound to shake dust out of a speaker grille. Frequencies between 8 kHz and 16 kHz create rapid micro-oscillations that break the adhesion between dry particles and the metal mesh, so gravity and air pressure can carry them out.
Dust is a different problem from water
Water is held in a grille by surface tension and needs large, slow diaphragm movement to break free — that is the 165 Hz case. Dust is held by weak electrostatic and mechanical adhesion to the mesh, which responds to the opposite treatment: fast, small oscillations.
Using the water tone on a dusty speaker mostly wastes a minute. Using the dust sweep on a wet speaker does very little either. Pick the mode that matches the actual symptom: sudden muffling after exposure to liquid means water; gradual loss of clarity over months means dust.
Cleaning methods, ranked

1. Acoustic sweep (this tool)
Vibrates the diaphragm so particles break free of the mesh. Nothing touches the device, so there is no way to damage it. Best first step, and the only method with no downside.
2. Soft-bristle brush
A dry toothbrush swept side to side at a shallow angle, so debris is carried out rather than pressed in. Angle matters more than pressure. Tap the brush clean between strokes.
3. Isopropyl alcohol 90%+
The only method here that dissolves the skin oil binding old dust to the mesh. Barely damp cotton swab, around the grille, never inside it. Below 90% it leaves water behind.
4. Adhesive tape
Lifts loose surface lint and nothing deeper. Use painter's or masking tape — packing tape leaves residue in the mesh openings, which then attracts more dust than it removed.
5. Vacuum suction
Pulls debris outward, which is the right direction. Household vacuums generate static and are too diffuse at a safe distance; a low-power electronics vacuum is a different tool.
6. Compressed air
Blows loose dust off the grille face. A close-range blast can rupture the mesh, and on a wet speaker it drives water into the driver chamber. Short bursts, 15 cm away, angled across.
7. Toothpick or needle
Do not. The mesh is a few tens of microns thick. Puncturing it permanently changes the acoustic response and lets more debris in than it ever removed.

Can sound waves really remove dust from a speaker?
They dislodge loose particles sitting in the mesh openings. Rapid oscillation breaks the weak adhesion between dry dust and metal. Dust that has bonded with skin oil over years needs a brush as well — the sweep alone will not shift a greasy film.
Which frequency removes dust best?
The 8 kHz to 16 kHz band. Higher frequencies produce rapid, small-amplitude oscillations, which is exactly what breaks the surface adhesion of fine particles. Low frequencies move the diaphragm too slowly to help with dust.
How often should I clean my phone speaker?
