To clean an iPhone speaker, set volume to maximum and hold the bottom edge facing the floor for 45 seconds. Then repeat with the phone upright to clear the earpiece slot. An iPhone has two speaker outlets, and cleaning only the bottom one leaves half the problem in place.
Where the iPhone speaker actually is
An iPhone has two audio outlets. The main loudspeaker is the row of holes on the bottom edge to the right of the charging port — the identical row on the left is the microphone and has no speaker behind it. The second outlet is the earpiece slot above the display, which carries call audio and acts as the left channel during stereo playback. That split is diagnostic: muffled calls with clear music means the earpiece slot, and no amount of cleaning the bottom grille will change it.
What's different about iPhone
Apple tells you exactly what a liquid alert means
Apple documents three alert strings: "Charging not available", "Liquid Detected in USB-C Connector", and "Liquid detected in Lightning Connector". Apple's instruction is to disconnect the cable immediately and let the iPhone dry for up to 24 hours. Charging and accessory connection stay unavailable until the connector, cable ends and accessory are dry.
Wireless charging still works while the port is wet
This is the part almost nobody mentions. Apple states that if you have a Qi-certified wireless charger you can still use it while the port is drying — just make sure the back of the iPhone is dry first. So a liquid alert does not mean 24 hours without power. It means 24 hours without the cable.
There is an emergency override, and it is a genuinely bad idea
Reconnecting the cable gives you the option to override liquid detection and charge anyway. Apple is explicit about the consequence: charging while the connector is wet can corrode the pins on the connector or cable and cause permanent damage. The alert exists to stop you doing exactly this.
Gradual muffling is lint, not water
The bottom grille on recent iPhones is slightly recessed, so trouser-pocket fibres pack into the mesh over months. A clogging mesh filters the high frequencies first, which is why the symptom presents as lost clarity before lost volume. Use the dust sweep for this, not the 165 Hz water tone — they target opposite problems.
No haptic assist on iOS
Safari does not expose the Vibration API, so this tool is audio-only on iPhone. On Android the same tool adds a haptic pulse alongside the tone. Nothing is broken — iOS simply does not permit web pages to drive the vibration motor.

All three alerts mean the same thing in practice: the cable stays out until the port is dry, but Qi wireless charging remains available the whole time.

How do I get water out of my iPhone speaker?
Play a 165 Hz tone at maximum volume with the bottom edge of the phone facing the floor for 45 to 60 seconds, so gravity works with the acoustic pressure. Repeat up to three times. Then clear the earpiece slot separately with the phone held upright.
Does this work on iPhone 15 and iPhone 16?
Yes. The tool plays through whichever speaker your browser is routed to, so it works on every iPhone running a current version of Safari or Chrome. Nothing about the method is model-specific.
Can I charge my iPhone when it says liquid detected?
Not with a cable. Apple says charging while the connector is wet can corrode the pins and cause permanent damage. You can use a Qi-certified wireless charger while it dries, provided the back of the phone is dry.
Will this damage my iPhone speaker?
No. The tool stays between 165 Hz and 16 kHz, inside the range your speaker already reproduces during ordinary music playback, and it cannot exceed the device's own maximum output. Nothing makes physical contact with the phone.
Should I use this or the iPhone Water Eject shortcut?
Both use the same acoustic principle. The Shortcuts version has to be installed first, which is awkward when the phone is already wet. This runs in the browser immediately. If the shortcut is already set up, either is fine.
My iPhone speaker is still muffled after cleaning. What now?
Run two or three cycles on both outlets with ten seconds between them. If there is no improvement after that, and especially if audio crackles at low volume too, the cause is mechanical rather than a blockage and needs a service appointment.
